Mobile is a sports town. From baseball to bowl games to high school football, you’ll find some of the best team sports right here along the Gulf Coast. World-class facilities for golf and tennis are a perfect match for a climate that allows for year-round outdoor activities. Mobile is one of the South’s best locations for hunting, fishing, sailing or just enjoying the great outdoors.

Ladd-Peebles Stadium

Ladd-Peebles Stadium www.laddpeeblesstadium.com is home to the Senior Bowl game(www.seniorbowl.com) presented by Food World, which pits squads of college all-stars against one another and attracts so many scouts. It is sometimes called a mini-convention of NFL coaches. Ladd-Peebles is also home to the Alabama-Mississippi High School All-Star Football Classic, the Gulf Coast Classic and regular season college and high school contests. Starting in 2008, it will be the home of the University of South Alabama’s new football team.

The GMAC Bowl

The GMAC Bowl www.gmacbowl.com brings more than 40,000 people to the Port City in December. Celebrations around the game last a full week and include basketball and a Mardi Gras parade.

Golfing

Regional golfing is among the nation’s finest, with more than 25 courses in the metropolitan area, ranging from traditional Scottish links to rolling hills with tight fairways. Golf Digest ranked Mobile in the top five Best Medium Size Golf Cities in the United States.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail www.rtjgolf.com/courses/magnolia_grove/ recently won a Reader’s Choice Award from its Southern Living magazine. The trail’s national exposure began in 1998 when it hosted the Nike Tour Championship. This event, which was covered by ESPN, brought the top 50 money leaders on the Nike Tour to compete for 15 spots on the PGA Tour. Magnolia Grove has hosted the AFLAC Champions Ladies’ PGA Tournament since 1999, bringing great female golfers such as Nancy Lopez and Betsy King to Mobile. Magnolia Grove is also home to the American Junior Golfers Association tournament each Labor Day. Celebrities such as Tommy Agee and Ken Stabler also host charity tournaments locally.

Mobile Tennis Center

The Mobile Tennis Center, located near Langan Park, is the nation’s largest public facility with 50 hard courts in one location.

The Mobile BayBears

Mobile, home to the the Mobile BayBears. Mobile is the hometown to baseball hall-of-famers Hank Aaron, Satchel Paige, Willie McCovey, Ozzie Smith and Billy Williams. The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, plays 70 home games at Hank Aaron Stadium and averages over 240,000 attendees each season. www.mobilebaybears.com.

University Sports

The University of South Alabama, Spring Hill College, the University of Mobile and Bishop State Community College each field teams in basketball, baseball, soccer and other team and individual sports for both men and women. The University of South Alabama’s 10,200-seat Mitchell Center www.mitchellcenter.com is bringing new sports and entertainment events to the city, including the Coors Classic basketball tournament.

Alabama Sports Festival

The Alabama Sports Festival www.alagames.com celebrated its 20th Anniversary in Mobile in 2002. These Olympic-style games bring more than 6,000 of the state’s top young athletes to the city to compete in more than 20 different sports. Events are held in 40 different venues throughout the area.

The Great Outdoors

If traditional sports aren’t your thing, the Mobile area is a haven for those who enjoy the great outdoors. From beautiful woodlands and wetlands to miles of waterways, beaches and bayous, the area is proud to host a variety of breathtaking views of nature.

There’s so much to do on the water. Sailing on the bay, canoeing or skiing the rivers, fishing on a lake or in the gulf and soaking in the sun on a sugar-white beach are just a few of the countless ways Mobilians and visitors enjoy the water.

Yacht Clubs

The greater Mobile area is home to four yacht clubs, all of which are active members in the Gulf Yachting Association. Beyond the yacht clubs, there are several marinas that cater to sailboat owners.

The Gulf Yachting Association (gya.org) holds several offshore racing events around the Gulf Coast. Mobile Bay is the home of the largest single day racing event in the country with the Mobile Middle Bay Lighthouse to Dauphin Island race. Several multi-club events are sponsored in the bay each year, as well as numerous single club events. Whether you prefer single class or cruising boat racing, you will find ample competition at your skill level.

Fishing

An outdoorsman’s delight, Mobile offers both deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and some of the best fresh water fishing in the Delta.

The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo www.adsfr.com is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Mobile’s First Light Marathon

Mobile also has a marathon which winds through its historic neighborhoods. Mobile’s First Light Marathon, coordinated by L’Arche Mobile, consists of a 26.2-mile marathon course, a 13.1-mile half marathon course and a 3-kilometer fun run. The marathon is an annual event each December 31.
